Fistula Fortnight: Healing Wounds, Renewing Hope

fistula_fortnight.gif2005 - The Fistula Fortnight, launched in Nigeria on 21 February 2005, was a groundbreaking initiative in terms of advocacy, treatment and developing the capacity to expand treatment options. The Fortnight was accomplished through an innovative collaboration among many partners, including the Government of Nigeria, UNFPA (the United Nations Population Fund), the Nigerian Red Cross, Virgin Unite, four hospitals, and 17 volunteer surgeons. It was implemented in the Nigerian states of Kano, Katsina, Kebbi and Sokoto, under the aegis of the UNFPA-led global Campaign to End Fistula.

The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital, EngenderHealth/The ACQUIRE Project, the Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ESOG), and Synergie des Femmes pour les Victimes des Violences Sexuelles (SFVS) cosponsored the first-ever conference on traumatic fistula in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from September 6 to 8, 2005. Participants included fistula surgeons, health and social workers, psychologists, activists, and lawyers from 12 African countries where traumatic fistula is known to exist, as well as global humanitarian and public health experts.

Making Motherhood Safer by Addressing Obstetric Fistula

Engenderhealth - While multiple efforts are underway to address the prevention and treatment of obstetric fistula, healthcare providers working in this area have repeatedly noted the dearth of comprehensive information and guidelines for counseling women with obstetric fistula. To address this specific need, EngenderHealth and the ACQUIRE Project brought together a group of 12 experts with experience in obstetric fistula counseling, in order to combine and refine the current knowledge in this area.

Africa Regional Fistula Meeting

Needs Assessment Report: Findings from nine African countries
